The exhibition Rusiñol and the Alhambra: The Awakening of a Painter-Poet highlights the most lyrical dimension of Santiago Rusiñol (1861–1931), an artist capable of transforming painting into a poetic and deeply sensitive experience.

The exhibition explores his relationship with nature, intensified through his stays in Granada and reflected in his depictions of gardens and, more specifically, of the Alhambra. Rusiñol made his first journey to Granada in 1887 and, from 1895 onwards, visited the city more frequently. The curators, Mercedes Palau-Ribes and Francesc Quílez, argue that “Rusiñol succeeded in renewing the iconographic conventions of a setting long associated with stereotypical picturesque imagery, moving beyond such clichés and transforming its motifs into a universal experience rooted in a luminous and timeless aesthetic.”

Rusiñol and the Alhambra: The Awakening of a Painter-Poet presents more than 100 works, including paintings, drawings, posters, photographs, books, magazines and archival materials.
