Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

Jorge Inglés (active between 1445 and 1475)

Tempera on panel

101 x 66 cm

Jorge Inglés was one of the most notable artists working in 15th-century Castile, playing a pioneering role in introducing Flemish painting to Spain.

The present work belonged to the altarpiece depicting scenes from the childhood and joys of the Virgin from the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Villasandino (Burgos). The altarpiece was dismantled between the 16th and 17th centuries, and some of the original panels were reassembled in the late 18th century using a new frame. However, some panels were excluded, which eventually led to their sale in the antiques market—most likely in the 19th century. This panel was among them.
