A Singular Work of Renaissance Silverwork in Zaragoza

On Wednesday, 17 June, Dr Lourdes de Sanjosé, a specialist in goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ work, gave a lecture entitled “A Singular Work of Renaissance Silverwork in Zaragoza. The Renaissance Monstrance and Its Dual Eucharistic and Devotional Significance.”

The lecture provided an exceptional opportunity to explore one of the most significant metal works in the Casacuberta Marsans Collection: a 16th-century custodia de asiento, or standing monstrance. Sanjosé examined its formal and technical features, which are essential to understanding the work within the context of the flourishing of Renaissance silverwork in Zaragoza, as well as its uses and meanings, tracing its continued significance well into the 19th century.
