Since Antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages, the serpent acquired a powerful symbolic meaning associated with prudence, following the Gospel exhortation to be &#8220;wise as serpents and innocent as doves,&#8221; as well as the Old Testament account that describes it as the most cunning of animals. This symbolism is further enriched by the episode of the bronze serpent that God commanded Moses to raise in the wilderness, reinforcing the salvific significance of this subject matter when applied to the pastoral staff. <\/p>\n<p>As is expected, the crosier is composed of three main elements: the shaft, the knop, and the volute. It is decorated with stylised birds and vegetal motifs of acanthus leaves and palmettes, features that establish a close relationship with the crosier from the Treasury of the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, now preserved in the Museum of Burgos.
