The publication of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Espa\u00f1a negra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Spain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 1899), including texts by \u00c9mile Verhaeren, marked the culmination of his expressionist period, characterised by a profound fascination with the tragic and the elemental, and a turn towards an impressionist language which centred on the elements of air and light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regoyos maintained close ties with the Catalan artists associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Els Quatre Gats<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with whom he shared a commitment to artistic modernity. During his long stay in Brussels, where he became involved with some of the most progressive artistic circles of the time, he painted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Mes de Mar\u00eda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Month of Mary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) in 1884 and included it in an exhibition at the Belgian National Salon. A decade later, after returning to Spain, he submitted it to the Second General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Segunda Exposici\u00f3n General de Bellas Artes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) and received an award as a result. When the jury declined to acquire the work for the city&#8217;s Museum of Fine Arts, a group of artists and intellectuals, led by the multifaceted Josep Pasc\u00f3 and the art critic Raimon Casellas, launched a fundraising campaign to buy it and donate it. The museum, however, refused the gift, unwilling to contradict the jury&#8217;s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A few years later, Regoyos was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Els Quatre Gats<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, conceived as a vindication of his work in keeping with the establishment&#8217;s independent spirit. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Mes de Mar\u00eda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was given a place of honour in the exhibition. The more specialised press used the opportunity not only to praise the painting but also to criticise the lack of vision of the museum that had rejected it.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a6e5bda e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a6e5bda\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e2f717 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e2f717\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>\u201cThis painting is the centrepiece of the small exhibition organised at Els Quatre Gats. For those familiar with the cathedrals of Rouen painted by Monet, it is evident that, while preserving his own artistic personality, Regoyos can stand comparison with the French master.
